Indian Knowledge System and Mathematics Development of Mathematics in India
Prof. S. A. Katre is a retired Professor of Mathematics from Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, India. Currently he is Lokmanya Tilak Chair Professor at S. P. Pune University. He is associated with the Mathematics Institution in Pune named Bhaskaracharya Pratishthana and also to some Mathematical Societies in India viz. The Mathematics Consortium, Indian Academy of Industrial and Applicable Mathematics, Indian Society for History of Mathematics as an office bearer.
We shall first briefly discuss the Indian Knowledge System and its parts such as Vedas, Philosophy, Puranas and Epics, Linguistics, Mathematics, Astronomy, Engineering and Technology, Health and Psychology, Governance and Public Administration. We shall then concentrate on Development of Mathematics in India in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus from the times of Bodhayana (800 BC) to Madhavacharya (14th Century AD).
